The patrol vessel was built for endurance, not combat. A dedicated monitor ship, smaller than a Fang, with a crew of twelve and systems designed for continuous operation over decades rather than the high-performance cycles of a hunter vessel. The interior was compact, the corridors narrow, the environmental systems calibrated to Vethrak standard. The Sentinel knew every resonant frequency of the hull, every cycle of the life support systems, the exact temperature gradient from the forward sensor bay to the crew quarters at the stern. Thirty-seven years was long enough for the ship to become an extension of the body, a second carapace that the Sentinel wore through the black.
The Boundary display occupied the forward station. It showed nothing. It had always shown nothing.
The Boundary was not visible to any sensor the Dominion possessed. It was defined by absence, a region where known space simply stopped returning data. The Dominion’s charts marked it as a line, a clean geometric boundary on the navigation displays, but the reality was a gradient. The Sentinel had registered it on the first deployment, a zone where the ship’s systems began reporting readings that did not match the physics the equipment had been calibrated to. The fold-space sensors returned noise instead of signal. The navigational reference points drifted from their calculated positions. The relationship between distance and transit time became unreliable, not in a way that could be measured but in a way the body registered, a drag on the awareness that the Sentinel’s nervous system registered as a slowing of something deeper than motion.
The briefing the Sentinel had received upon assignment, thirty-seven years ago, had been delivered by an Executor whose name the Sentinel had long since stopped carrying: “You will observe. You will not approach. You will not investigate. If the Boundary changes, you will report. You will not act.”
The Sentinel had asked one question at that briefing. The only question in decades of service that the Sentinel remembered precisely: “What is on the other side?”
The Executor’s answer had been: “That is not relevant to your assignment.”
The Sentinel had thought about that answer for thirty-seven years. The Dominion did not give answers that did not satisfy. The Dominion gave functional information, operational directives, the precise parameters required for the execution of a task. When the Dominion said that a question was not relevant to the assignment, the Dominion was categorizing the question as outside the scope of the Vethrak asking it. Not forbidden. Not dangerous. Not unknown. Irrelevant. The category itself was the message.
Thirty-seven years was long enough for the Sentinel to wonder whether the category was correct. The Dominion claimed every system. The Dominion harvested every species that could be harvested. The Dominion left no unknown unclassified, no territory unexplored, no question unanswered, because unanswered questions were a vulnerability and the Dominion did not tolerate vulnerability. Except here. Except this one region of space that the Dominion did not enter, did not investigate, did not explain.
The Sentinel had never spoken this wondering aloud. Vethrak did not share operational doubts with crewmates. The Sentinel’s function was to monitor the Boundary, and the Sentinel monitored it, and the monitoring was the work, and the work was the meaning, and the meaning was not questioned.
The wondering existed, a current beneath the surface of the operational mind, a question that the Sentinel had learned to hold without examining, like a pressure that could only be managed by not directing attention to it.
The daily routine was precise. The Sentinel ran the standard diagnostic cycle at the same interval each watch. The environmental systems were checked, the sensor arrays calibrated, the Boundary display consulted. The display showed nothing. The Sentinel logged the result. The cycle repeated.
The crew operated with the quiet efficiency of Vethrak who had been assigned to the same posting for long enough that communication was not necessary. The junior sensor operator had been on the patrol for eleven years and had never once alerted the Sentinel to a contact. The navigator had been on the patrol for nineteen years and had never deviated from the standard patrol route. The ship was a machine of routine, and the routine was the patrol, and the patrol was the Boundary, and the Boundary did not change.
Except that the Sentinel had begun to notice something that was not in the display. A sensation that could not be verified by any instrument. A pressure at the edge of awareness, a sensation that the Boundary was not empty but was occupied by something that the Dominion’s sensors could not register. The Sentinel had no word for this sensation. The Dominion’s training did not include it. The Sentinel could not verify it, could not share it, could not act on it.
The sensation had been present for the last five years of the thirty-seven. The Sentinel had not logged it. There was no protocol for logging a sensation that the instruments did not confirm. The Sentinel could not report a change in the Boundary’s state when the Boundary displayed no change. To report a perception that the instruments did not support would be to report a failure of the Sentinel’s own sensory apparatus, a degradation of the function that defined the Sentinel’s existence. The Sentinel did not report it.
The Sentinel registered it every cycle, when the diagnostic was complete and the display showed nothing and the routine continued, the Sentinel stood at the forward station and registered the pressure of something beyond the Boundary that was aware of the Sentinel in return. The sensation was not threat, not recognition, not communication. It was attention. Something on the other side of the line the Dominion would not cross was paying attention to the Vethrak who observed, and the Sentinel could not prove it and could not stop feeling it and could not speak of it.
The work continued. The Sentinel cycled the diagnostics. The display showed nothing. The crew maintained the routine. The Boundary did not change.
The Sentinel had been changed, five years ago, when the first pressure registered at the edge of awareness. The Sentinel had not reported it then and would not report it now. The Sentinel did not know what the change meant, and could not ask, and would not speak of it to anyone. The certainty that something on the other side of the Boundary was watching back was the only thing the Sentinel now possessed that had not been there before. It was not fear. It was not hope. It was simply the shape the Boundary had made, and the Sentinel would carry it for the rest of the sentinel’s existence, watching a limit that would not change, serving a Dominion that did not explain itself, held in the attention of something the Dominion did not acknowledge.
The display showed nothing. The Sentinel logged the result. The cycle continued.
