The packet would not open under Samrawit’s signature.
She kept her thumb against the terminal until the refusal acquired its own timestamp, then lifted it. Beyond the lab partition, Article Four remained in the cradle, its three damaged transitions carrying no new load. An answer had reached the yard. That was not yet permission to read it.
Onur secured his boots at the neighboring station.
“Same purpose?” he asked.
“Materials review. Both retained certificate links.”
Wanjiku’s authorization named Samrawit for that bounded engineering review. Structural release remained elsewhere, untouched by the new permission. Samrawit opened the scope long enough for Onur to compare it with the return wrapper.
He applied the second key.
Two columns appeared. Neither had an address.
Samrawit matched the certificate hashes before reading the process fields. Both were complete. Both matched the surviving receiving links. The response signature checked against the authorized return, and the applicable revisions carried their own signatures and timestamps.
Onur checked the broker’s disposition beside them. A valid signed answer had closed the one-time token before its fixed expiry. No direct source connection had opened to deliver it.
“Technical copy only,” he said.
She checked the missing fields. Source name absent by design. Route absent by design. The five requested categories had answers rather than blanks.
That difference mattered more than the pale confirmation bar.
She brought the forming histories together.
The first plate population had been normalized. The other had been thermomechanically worked and accelerated-cooled. Both belonged to the same nominal strength family. Both met the specification under which the source had accepted them.
Her glove stopped against the restraint bar.
There it was, written without a qualification she had supplied herself.
Not two versions of bad metal. Two acceptable materials whose histories required different work.
She opened the principal directions, then the final-treatment records. The directional structure in her retained micrographs belonged beside the worked population’s recorded route. The more uniform structure belonged beside normalization. The images had supported those histories. They had never supplied the missing certificate.
“The joining limits?” Onur asked.
Samrawit moved to the next field.
The worked plate’s approved heat-input range was lower. Its prior working and accelerated cooling were part of the condition the joining procedure had to preserve. The high-heat post-weld treatment listed for the normalized plate was not qualified across the second history.
She placed their local thermal record beside it.
The same completed cycle covered both sides of the mixed transitions.
Wanjiku arrived while Samrawit was aligning the treatment record with the section photographs. She caught the rail, clipped her slate, and waited for the comparison rather than the conclusion.
Samrawit indicated the altered band beside the weld.
“The returned compatibility record identifies the toughness loss this treatment can produce in the worked-side heat-affected zone. Our cycle falls outside that plate’s qualified joining history.”
“The hardness?”
“Supports the changed condition. It still isn’t a toughness measurement.”
Wanjiku brought the sacrificial test record closer. Its unloading emissions and measured crack growth occupied the same side. The same-history control had remained clean within the examination.
Samrawit kept the evidence separate long enough to check each link. Parent plate to cut. Cut to transition. Transition to scan. Local treatment to the completed work record. Returned qualification to its governing revision.
An answer could become another shortcut if she let relief perform the comparison.
“We have the process distinction now,” she said. “The local reproduction fits the incompatible treatment. Neither record alone would have established the whole chain.”
“Does it reject all the worked stock?”
“No. It rejects treating its history as interchangeable with the normalized stock.”
Wanjiku left that sentence open beside the held barrel’s disposition. A sound plate could still be wrong for a procedure. A failed joint did not make every plate carrying the same history useless.
Tuva reached the lab rail behind her. The welder’s hands remained closed around it.
“My travel record?”
Samrawit opened the execution trace.
“Inside the instruction you were given. The same-history control already supported that. This explains why repeating the instruction on unlike histories could damage the joint.”
Tuva followed the completed cycle to its end.
“Then write which instruction.”
Samrawit drew the work-package reference into the finding. Not the welder’s name alone. Not the word materials standing by itself where everyone could choose what it meant.
The revision chain made the answer harder to finish.
An earlier signed record kept the two process histories distinct, with their separate joining conditions. A later logistics summary retained nominal grade, chemistry, dimensions and acceptance while collapsing the distinction into a shared category. Its timestamp came after the source acceptance records.
No one had needed to falsify an assay.
Samrawit followed that summary into the local receiving transformation Onur had already traced. The yard’s blind reissue made the collapsed category usable for selection. Acceptance removed the temporary technical payload. Hashes survived without the attributes they could have protected.
“The earlier version existed,” she said.
“It still exists,” Onur replied.
She returned to it. He was right. The packet held both versions, not an improved final page pretending it had always said the right thing.
Her first root-cause line blamed the blind category. It was accurate and insufficient.
Engineering had questioned the missing history. Engineering had also permitted conditional mixed joining under a common treatment while the distinction remained unanswered. The hold and instrumented proof had caught the consequence before service. They had not made the earlier assumption sound.
Samrawit retained the first line as a rejected draft and entered the finding beneath it:
“loss of process-history distinction during blind reissue, followed by incompatible shared joining treatment.”
Wanjiku read it without touching the release controls.
“Put our decision beside the missing fields.”
Samrawit attached the conditional work authorization and its unresolved questions. Security’s schema failure would not become a place to hide an engineering choice. Engineering’s choice would not erase the rule that had made the wrong answer look complete.
She added the exclusions carefully. The records supported no cause in the source feedstock or gross chemistry. Tuva’s workmanship was not a supported cause. No evidence supported deliberate interference.
The sentence did not identify where anyone had mined the material. She did not need that place to distinguish a compliant source population from a joining error.
Onur checked the retained technical copy against the response.
“No source identity?” she asked.
“None in this view.”
He did not offer to fill the absence.
Cho joined them with the next work block on his slate. Samrawit gave him the signed finding before he asked what could move.
He read both retained revisions, then the local treatment record.
“Can we cut back to the mapped envelope?”
“This supports developing the correction,” she said. “It doesn’t qualify the procedure or authorize cutting.”
Wanjiku kept the remaining gates separate. A representative corrected joining qualification. The actual repair under an approved disposition. The waiting interval, examination and repeated proof Article Four still owed.
Cho moved the unearned repair time out of the current block. The displacement stayed visible.
Samrawit saved the returned earlier and later records without replacing either. The new technical record would have to preserve that relationship every time somebody improved a summary. She left the root cause attached to the evidence, not standing in its place.
Beneath the lamp, two captive pieces of gray plate looked much as they had before the answer arrived. The difference lay in what she could now responsibly do with them.
She reopened the packet once more. Forming, direction, treatment, compatible work, signed revisions. Everything needed to develop a repair was there. Nothing told her where the metal had been processed.
Author’s note: This story continues the Site Anvil arc in late Year 3, with the response to the blind query. The reader knows the material includes Ceres-derived feedstock; Samrawit receives no source identity. The finding supports no cause in that feedstock, chemistry, Tuva’s workmanship or deliberate interference, and the barrel remains unreleased.
