The Aurora Drive took hold and Earth fell away from the glass.

Real stars this time. Not the painted overlay of a docked bridge. Not the station-keeping box two kilometers off Ring Three. The field moved. The hull sang in the register drydock had kept from him since Kaath-Seven.

David Rivera sat with his left hand on the armrest and did not hunt for the worn place. The Cascade Reactor sat warm through the plates. Even. Ready. The air carried the faint ozone of a drive under load and the cleaner bite of new seals. Twenty-nine days of yard work did not wash out in one departure.

“Aurora circuit is green, Captain.” Ensign Nokuthula Cele kept her hands on the helm board. Eyes on the thrust plot. “Zero-four c and climbing. Fold mark is thirty-eight minutes at this burn.”

“Hold the climb at zero-four.” The shimmer was already a faint blue-white haze along the fuselage, gravitational, the old vulnerability. Human ships could not hide under drive. From the chair it was only weather. “I want that field stable before we arm anything.”

“Aye.”

Marcus was not on the ship.

The fact sat in the room the way a dark station sat on a board: present by absence, not by comment. No one looked at the hatch. David did not look at the hatch. Today the roster was clean. The chair was the only Rivera station on the board.

“Weapons. Drop us to four klicks a second. Drones on the rail?”

“Twelve on the starboard rack.” The petty officer at sensors kept the tone of a checklist. “Range twenty kilometers. Cold.”

“Warm the kinetics. Lances stay safed until I say. First four on my mark.”

The accelerators tracked. Four drones left the rack in a staggered fan, pale against the black. David gave the mark. Four impacts. Four clean kills. The board logged the spreads inside the envelope engineering had signed after the hull work.

“Again. Remaining eight. Mix the pattern. I want a crossing pair and a late break.”

They mixed it. One drone jinked late, the way a garrison tender would if the clock surprised it. Cele adjusted the attitude two degrees without being asked so the next volley had a cleaner bore. The late break still died inside the envelope. Precision that did not need to be requested. The crew had decided weeks ago. He had been the last one in the room then. He was not the last one now.

“Shields. Modulation check. Full cycle.”

Barrier modulation came up as a line of numbers until the test pulse hit it. The pulse flared and ran out across the field in a ripple, then died. Coverage held. The gaps sat where they always sat: exhaust, ports, the sensor spine. Five percent. Human work. Honest work. He ran the cycle a second time because the first clean run after a yard period was a liar if you let it be.

“Log it nominal. Resume the outbound. Zero-four. Fold mark as written.”

“Logged. Climbing.”

Cele had asked him in a corridor five days ago whether they ran Aurora before the fold checklist. He had told her Aurora first. If the circuit threw a fault, he wanted it on this side of a transition. The circuit had not thrown a fault. The mark waited at the far end of the trial box, a designated empty, charted last week, cleared of traffic.

The overlay updated.

A scatter bloomed on the outbound heading. Not traffic. Not a courier. A cloud. Small returns, dense, no transponder, no salvage tag, nothing the last survey had bothered to name.

“Contact.” Cele’s stiffness from the corridor was gone. Helm voice. “Debris. Bearing zero-one-four, range one point one million. On our heading. Closing at relative. Not on the chart.”

David had the geometry before the second update.

Fragment cloud. Crysteel and foam and the torn rib of something that had once been a hull. Fourteen years of slow tumble off an old engagement, the kind a sweep missed when a field migrated between surveys. Thin enough to thread at the edge. Dense enough at the core to score the new port plating if they held this heading at this speed. At zero-four they would be inside it in a minute and a half. The new seals would not get a second opinion.

Marcus would have gone through it. Closer. Get us closer. The thought arrived and left. It was not useful. This was not a charge. This was a verification. The ship had already proved she could take a hit. She did not need to take one for the checklist.

“Come left fourteen. Drop to zero-zero-eight. Take the thin edge, not the core. I want forty kilometers of clearance off the densest band.”

“Left fourteen. Zero-zero-eight.” Cele’s hands were already moving. “Thin edge.”

Defiant answered in four seconds. The relative closed over the next six minutes at a speed a man could still think inside. The cloud slid up and right across the glass, a slow tumble of pale metal and black gaps, invasion wreckage that had outlived its chart. A rib the length of a shuttle rolled once and showed a stenciled number nobody in this room could still assign to a hull. The proximity tone stayed dark. The new seals held. The board stayed green.

Clear.

The bridge went quiet in the way a good bridge went quiet after a call that had been the right call.

Cele did not look away from the plot.

“Nice catch, Captain.”

David did not correct the informality. He nodded.

“Log the field. Send the track to station traffic. Tell them the trial box needs a new sweep before anyone else burns this heading.”

“Aye.”

He sat with the aftertaste of the decision. Immediate. Correct. Calm. The crew had not waited for a second voice. They had not looked at the hatch. He had not looked at the hatch.

The chair had taken his weight in dock. It had taken his weight in a station-keeping box. It had now taken his weight in space, with a cloud that was not on the chart and a ship that would have paid for a late order in crysteel.

“Fold checklist. As written. We finish the package.”

They finished it.

The Fold Drive came up in concentric rings the viewport turned into a bruise of light. Charge held. Geometry clean. Cele called the marks. Sensors called the all-clear. David held the field for the full count engineering had written into the package, then collapsed it. No translation. The rehearsal was the point. A charged drive that came up clean and went down clean was a drive he could trust forty-three light-years from a yard.

The Cascade Reactor never left its even register.

“Secure from fold. Bring us about. Prometheus, standard approach.”

“Aye, Captain.”

Earth came back into the glass on the return burn, blue-white, the industrial constellation of the yard already resolving into rings and amber work light. Vanguard still held in her framework, cyan running lights along the charcoal length. Hope sat docked, a dark hull with a warm blister. Defiant came in free, the way she had left, the way she would leave again.

David kept his left hand on the armrest. The worn place was still Marcus’s. The rest of the chair had stopped arguing weeks ago. Today the argument had nowhere left to live.

The shakedown was complete. The ship was ready. Her captain was ready with her. The chair was his. It had been for a while.
