The first depot marker went up on the wall before anyone sat down.

Sarah Vance stood at the display with her hands empty. The notes lived in the work, not on a pad. Three weeks of Vasquez’s technical annotations and her own operational maps had compressed into six pale overlays. The numbers arrived in the order she needed them.

Captain Vance took the chair nearest the display. Not the head of the table. The seat with the best angle on the data. Admiral Chen resolved on the wall two seconds late, Earthside, gray hair, dress uniform, the same lag the war council had carried two days ago.

“Administrator Vance.” Chen did not waste the opening. “Preliminary. I am listening.”

Sarah did not correct the title. Administrator was accurate for eleven years. Intelligence advisor was accurate for the last two. The work did not care what they called her.

“Six viable depot targets in the captured Kaath-Seven database.” She brought the overlay up as a field, not a list. Coordinates without names. Patrol cycles without triage. “All six remain on the same logistics doctrine we took at Kaath-Seven. Predictable patrols. Fixed garrisons. A supply network that treats every cargo type as equal priority.”

Kira’s attention sat on the display the way it sat on a tactical board. Cataloguing. Not interrupting.

Sarah opened Depot One.

“Outer-sector node. Seventy-two-hour patrol, three-hull rotation, no variance. Two light escorts and a maintenance complement. Mid-density fuel and spare parts. Vasquez flagged the fuel volume as standard for the class, not a vault. Reinforcement: fourteen hours.”

Two without looking at her hands.

“Inner-corridor. Ninety-six-hour patrol. One capital-weight hull and four escorts. High fuel, low biological stores. Forty-one percent of power into the drive-fuel bays. Response from the adjacent node: nine hours.”

Three. She kept her voice flat. The data did the work.

“Harvest-adjacent. Forty-eight-hour patrol, thickest garrison of the six. They expect this node to be busy, not hit. Mixed density. Reinforcement: six hours. If you want a fight, this is the fight.”

Kira’s mouth tightened a fraction. She did not speak.

Four.

Sarah enlarged the overlay. Vasquez’s annotations crowded the margins in Salvage Protocol shorthand, red priority lines, the same angular script that had lived on the adjacent station for three weeks.

“Maximum recorded supply density. Fuel, biological stores, replacement hull material, and a cold-storage draw Vasquez put at thirty-eight percent of total depot power. Not a vault on the Kaath-Seven scale. Still disproportionate. Eighty-hour patrol, two-hull rotation, invariant route through a system with four viable alternates. They take the closest path every cycle. Three escorts. Reinforcement from the nearest heavy station: nineteen hours.”

She let nineteen hours sit in the room.

Five.

“Second-highest density. Complementary inventory. Four holds the fuel and the cold stores. Five holds the fold-drive spares and the maintenance fabricators. Hit one and the other becomes a stranded warehouse. Eighty-four-hour patrol, offset from Four by eleven hours. They are not timed as a pair. They are timed as neighbors who have never needed to cover each other. Two escorts and a tender. Reinforcement: twenty-one hours. The longest window in the useful set.”

Six last, because last was where the temptation lived.

“Deep-reserve. Lowest garrison. Longest patrol gap: one hundred and ten hours. The inventory is real. The isolation is also real. Reinforcement is thirty-four hours, which looks like a gift until you count the fold legs required to reach it and the hours the strike group spends away from Sol. It is the quietest target. It is not the loudest proof.”

The air handlers cycled. Chen’s image held. Two seconds. Then:

“You have walked six targets. The council authorized two. I will not hear a campaign dressed as a briefing.”

“You will not.” Sarah collapsed the field to Four and Five and left the other four markers dim. “These two.”

Kira turned her head. “Which two would you hit first?”

The question had been coming since the war council. Sarah had answered it in this room at 0310, alone, with Vasquez’s annotations still open on the adjacent station. She did not pause now.

“Four and Five. Maximum supply density. Minimum reinforcement response. If you want to prove the concept, hit the targets where success is loudest. Two depots emptying on the same clock, nineteen and twenty-one hours before anyone can arrive to argue about it. Complementary inventories. The network has no triage. Take the densest nodes and the rest of the chain has to invent a priority system it has never practiced.”

Kira’s gaze moved from Four to Five and back.

“Walk the failure case,” Kira said.

“One raid delayed or aborted. The other still strips a high-density node and still forces the network to reroute without a ranking doctrine. You lose simultaneity. You keep the proof that a depot can be emptied. If both abort, you have spent rehearsal and fold fuel and taught the Vethrak nothing they can use, because you never arrived.” Sarah paused. “If both succeed, the logistics web has two holes of a size it does not know how to classify. Everything is priority. Everything is critical. Two missing nodes of this density will not degrade gracefully. They will jam.”

Chen’s image caught up.

“Vasquez concurs?”

“Vasquez wrote the density and power-draw numbers. The operational pairing is mine. She reviewed it at 0440. Her note was one line. The inventories lock. The clocks do not. That is the point.”

A reflection moved in the dark glass of the display. Silver at the temples. Invasion lines. Eleven years in an asteroid, sending a signal into a dark that did not answer, scraping intercepts off static and calling the scraps intelligence. The colony administrator who had asked for help on a frequency nobody answered. The woman in the glass was still her. The room was not Sanctuary. The people in it could act.

She did not look at that reflection again.

“Captain Vance.” Chen’s voice did not rise. It never did. “Does this pairing survive the operational frame I asked for?”

“It does,” Kira said. “Two battle spaces. Separate clocks that happen to overlap. Sol retains the defensive screen. Strike group composition still comes to you before anyone paints a hull number.”

Chen was still for the length of the lag plus a breath.

“Your analysis is sound, Administrator. Your recommendation is accepted. We will hit Four and Five.”

The first time Chen had approved Sarah’s intelligence without a qualification, without a classification stamp, without the particular silence that meant the data would be filed and not used. Sarah kept her hands at her sides. The steel in her shoulders did the work her face refused to do.

“The pairing package in six hours,” she said. “Patrol overlays, garrison estimates, Vasquez’s technical annex, and the failure cases.”

“Six hours is acceptable.” Chen’s gaze moved to Kira. “Captain. The frame incorporates this. Forty-eight hours from the council still holds. I am still not authorizing a launch.”

“Understood,” Kira said.

The display went dark. Chen’s image died with it. Kira stood, glanced once at the two bright markers, and touched two fingers to the table edge in a gesture that was not thanks and was not a salute.

“Aunt Sarah.”

The name landed in the professional room like a private frequency.

“You were always going to be the one who told us where.” Kira’s mouth almost moved toward a smile and did not complete it. “Now we have to be the ones who get there.”

She left. The door sealed.

Sarah stood in the intelligence section with Four and Five still glowing and the other four dim, a field built from seventeen thousand records and three weeks of nights that did not end at a reasonable hour. She shut the display down. The markers died. The viewport across the room faced the shipyard, not Earth. Cyan running lights on three hulls held in zero-gravity construction frameworks. Hope. Vanguard. Defiant. The ships that would carry the pairing she had put into Chen’s mouth.

She sat.

The screens were dark. The data was filed. The air handlers cycled twice.

Eleven years of scraps. Three weeks of a goldmine. One sentence from an admiral who did not qualify her work.

She was not on the outside anymore.
