Earth filled half the viewport when Kira Vance found the observation deck empty.

The planet turned beneath Hope in blue, white, and the amber scars of cities rebuilt along old coastlines. Prometheus Station crossed the curve in dark segments, its work lights burning around the hulls under repair. The compartment lights had dimmed for evening watch. Gray walls, bare rail, twelve empty seats.

Kira took the seat nearest the glass.

Her bridge waited three levels below with the campaign slate locked and the departure clock running. Alpha’s final readiness review had closed at 97.4 percent. The missing fraction belonged to five maintenance tasks, two supply transfers, and a Keraneth translation check scheduled to clear before 0300.

The numbers were good.

They were still numbers.

The hatch opened behind her.

Thomas Okonkwo stopped inside with one hand on the frame. His duty uniform carried a dark streak of sealant along the left sleeve. A tool case hung from his other hand.

“Captain.”

“Lieutenant.”

He glanced at the empty seats, then at Earth. “I can find another compartment.”

“There are eleven seats left.”

Thomas set the tool case against the wall and chose a seat three places away. Not close enough to turn the moment into something it was not. Not far enough to pretend they were strangers.

Earth did the talking for a while.

A storm turned over the Atlantic, white arms curling around a dark center. Night advanced across western Africa. Lagos lay beyond the terminator, hidden under cloud and distance.

“The mess served lentil loaf again,” Thomas said.

“I know.”

“You ate it?”

“I signed the inventory waiver allowing it aboard. Responsibility requires consequences.”

His laugh stayed low in the quiet compartment. “That explains why Osei called it command-grade insulation.”

“She called it emergency hull filler.”

“Only after she tried the edge piece.”

Kira looked at him. “The edge piece was a tactical error.”

“She said the same thing during the briefing.”

The joke had landed badly at 0600, three hours into a review of fold windows and casualty contingencies. Osei had waited for silence, studied the untouched tray beside her console, and announced she had identified the fleet’s final untested weapon. Kira had given her six seconds before returning to the slate.

Thomas had laughed then, too.

“You encouraged her,” Kira said.

“Morale support falls under integration.”

“It does not.”

“Chen’s citation was broad.”

The almost-smile came without permission. Kira let it stay.

Thomas leaned back. The tool case rested against his boot, one corner worn silver beneath the black coating. “Hope’s aft coupling passed. The Keraneth relay held through twelve thousand simulated transitions. Engineering wants one more run after the coolant loop stabilizes.”

“You agree?”

“I requested it. The repair schedule has forty minutes of slack before the transfer lock.”

“Forty-two.”

“Engineering surrendered two minutes to tactical?”

“Tactical demonstrated a superior claim.”

“Tactical always demonstrates a superior claim.”

The exchange settled between them with the ease of an old watch routine. No explanation. No effort. Two years ago, they had spoken across damage reports and casualty boards, each sentence shaped around the next emergency. Somewhere between Tau Ceti and Kaath-Seven, the work had stopped being the only language they shared.

Kira turned back to Earth.

Prometheus’s outer ring moved across the lower edge of the glass. Vanguard remained in her service framework, matte charcoal armor broken by cyan running lights. Defiant held free beyond the ring, combat-loaded and dark except for the steady white of occupied compartments. Hope was absent from the view because Hope surrounded them.

Tomorrow, the geometry would change.

“Shaw asked me to inspect Vanguard’s fold control bus at 0500,” Thomas said. “She moved it from 0530 because she thinks I need sleep.”

“Do you?”

“The system does.”

“That was not the question.”

He rubbed a thumb across the seam of his tool case. The wrench would be inside or in his pocket, wrapped in the same faded cloth his mother had given him. “Probably.”

“Then Captain Shaw’s assessment is correct.”

“I was hoping for professional solidarity.”

“You came to the wrong captain.”

“I keep doing that.”

The words changed the air by less than a degree.

Thomas went still. Kira kept her gaze on the planet. She could turn toward him. She could ask what he meant and force the sentence into a shape neither of them could mistake. The question waited behind her teeth, precise and reckless.

Hope’s ventilation cycled through the deck. A relay clicked somewhere behind the wall. Earth continued its patient turn beneath them.

The mission came first.

Not because the other thing was smaller. The choice mattered because it was not.

Kira rested both hands on the rail. “Alpha’s final brief is at 0700.”

“I know.”

“Vanguard’s reserve window begins nine minutes after our fold.”

“I know that too.”

“Your coupling standard is carrying every targeting exchange between three species.”

“Kira.”

Her name, without rank. Quiet enough to remain inside the compartment.

She looked at him.

Thomas’s open face had changed since the young engineer who cried at Vanguard’s first drive flare and made no effort to hide it. The openness remained. Confidence had grown around it, not over it. His hand rested near the pocket where he carried his father’s wrench.

“After the mission,” he said.

The phrase held no demand. No promise either. It left room for distance, damaged ships, changed orders, and every fact neither of them could control.

It also left room for an after.

“After the mission,” Kira said.

Thomas nodded once.

They did not discuss what the words meant. Definition would have been a kind of advance, and neither of them had come here to cross that line. The acknowledgment was enough. The door stayed open. The mission stayed first.

Below them, dawn reached the Mediterranean. Light moved across water and broken cities, across places rebuilt by people who had learned to make plans without guarantees.

Thomas shifted one seat closer.

The empty chair between them remained.

They spoke about the aft coupling run. They argued over whether forty minutes counted as margin or temptation. Thomas described a Skarreth diagnostic fixture that compressed itself into a maintenance access and then refused to release until a technician adjusted the pressure by three kilopascals. Kira told him Osei had placed the lentil loaf on the restricted-material list.

Neither mentioned Depot Four.

Neither mentioned the ships that might not return.

The watch-change tone sounded at 2200, two soft notes through the compartment.

Thomas stood and lifted the tool case. Kira rose beside him. Earth had turned far enough to put the Atlantic under darkness, city lights tracing the rebuilt coasts.

At the hatch, their paths divided. The passage to port led toward engineering and the transfer junction. The ladder down led to Hope’s bridge.

“Your forty-two minutes are now thirty-seven,” Kira said.

“Tactical theft.”

“Operational necessity.”

Thomas stepped into the port passage. “After the mission.”

Kira put one hand on the ladder rail. “After the mission.”

He went to engineering. She went to the bridge.

The silence between them remained on the observation deck, full rather than empty, while Earth turned below and the departure clock kept counting.
